I've been using this tool for quite a long time. It is one of the best pieces of software to search massive amounts of text documents very quickly. It has a great query function and ranks the documents by the number of keywords in the document. It searches all kinds of files that contain text (.doc, .pdf, .txt, .xls and others) It is free to demo. I have used google desktop and dtSearch on the same machine. Google desktop is fine for an off the cuff search of your desktop but dtSearch is much quicker and can pinpoint a document better and save you time by ranking the documents for you. Check it out.

Public company directory with a super sort function
Ever wanted to find a listing all of the public retail food companies in New Jersey? I have! I have a client who was searching for a CTO but they had to come from the retail food industry and the target companies had to be local. This is just an example of what this directory has to offer. How about doing a company search by state, then being able to sort them by industry or sector? What if you have a candidate and on the resume it says that the company went out of business back in 1993? This site can help you make a confirmation. Great site!

Find People with Google ZoomInfo search string
http://tinyurl.com/4ysesu - Click on the link then change the ficticious name to the person who you are searching for. Basically you are searching zoominfo with google. Very good for finding executive or high level people within companies.
Find job trend information about anything!
http://www.indeed.com/jobtrends - I recently uncovered a great way to see what technologies, industries, are trending in relation to keywords in job postings on the major job boards. You can do neat stuff with this search. For example if you search on a fellow recruiter's email address you can see how many jobs they have been posting. You could search on a company name to see if they have a healthy appetite for new hires.
Find resumes on Google with this search string
http://tinyurl.com/3zr8d4 - Click on the link. You can change what you are looking for or the location by editting the end of the search string. This search string can be changed to search pretty much anything but you can see that it is using special google search codes such as intitle and inurl as well as searching for Microsoft Word documents, text documents, Adobe PDF or HTML. This particular search string is looking for resumes.
Does that company suck?
Check out http://www.glassdoor.com/ and http://www.vault.com/
Glassdoor is pretty new and vault has been around for a while. You can find some pretty disturbing or enlightening information from employees of the company you are searching about.

One of the best business address lookup sites.
http://tinyurl.com/4qxsgv - I'm a fan of superpages. You can do all kinds of interesting searches. For example... you can search on a single corporate address and it will come back with all of the corporate names in the building on every floor.
Who owns that website? Find URL contact information!
http://whois.domaintools.com/ - This is a really great site. I use this all the time when I have someone's email address and don't have their phone number or address. Works really well when they do not register their URL privately.
Search for residential contact info.

All these sites pretty much work the same, but I seem to get better results from the Lycos search. I have no idea why.

Look up birthdays and towns where people live.
http://www.ussearch.com/
So you are trying to reach a person from a older copy of their resume. The phone doesn't work and the email bounces back and you may find a linkedin profile on the person but they no longer work at the company in their linkedin profile. But you can pretty much guess within a few years how old they may be based upon the data on their resume. I use this site to search for the person's name, in the state they most likely live in and enter their estimated age. This website can usually give me a few other towns where they may reside and then I do a www.pipl.com search to get their phone number or I go to the lycos site to track them down in the directory.

Was their name ever in the newspaper?
http://www.highbeam.com/ - It's amazing what you can find here. You get some pretty good results using it for free. I did a search on my name and came up with an article from a major newspaper published in in January of 1995!
If they ever bought a house in NJ it would be listed here!
http://tinyurl.com/y4mvj3 - Have you ever wanted a complete listing of all the neighbors on your street or wanted to know how much a house in your neighborhood sold for? Check this free page for NJ tax records.
Say you are walking through your neighborhood and you meet a new neighbor who just moved in. Or what if you are sending out block party announcements and want to put everyones name on the invitations. Or what if you know who is living 3 doors down but want to find out what their spouse's name is. This is a great site. It only publishes information from homes in NJ. Some records have a picture of the house. You can see what a house sold for 10 years ago! Great stuff.
